studio visit: a day with foret
A day with Foret...
As you may or may not know, I used to work for Anthropologie! Before being employed for Urban Outfitters Inc., I interned for Anthropologie's visual team... Twice! One of my bosses there was the talented Erin. I tried to show up early, stay late, and work as hard and fun as possible to make an impression. As I was leaving as an intern, I was hired as a sales associate and left the company a while after to manage a clothing consignment shop. I wasn't sure I had made an impression on the company, but it definitely made an impression on me. It's where I decided that visual merchandising, be it installation art or floor plans, is what I want to do.
On a visit to shop + visit old coworkers at Anthro, I learned that Erin had left to begin Foret, a bespoke floral installation company with her co-creator, Rose. I ended up meeting up with Rose and Erin at their new studio and we talked about how I'd be happy to help them if they ever needed another set of hands. It's a beautiful hidden treasure that they put their own little touches in.
Luckily for them (and me!), they have recently taken on so much work because word is reaching everyone that these two are very talented, and they needed an extra hand! I was so happy to visit Fringe in Union Square again and see what these ladies were up to. They never cease to impress me. I spent a large chunk of the day picking twigs and leaves....and even a slug out of moss - a step I would never even think was involved. Let me tell you: you could EAT off of that moss after I was done with it. Did I mention there are different types of moss? My floral knowledge is slim - very, very slim, so I was excited to learn that I wouldn't be asked to take a test about different types of flowers and whatnot.
I had a great time catching up, learning new things, getting a little dirty, and eating too-good donuts from Union Square Donuts. I can't wait until these ladies get too busy again and need someone who's not botanically inclined. Thanks again, Foret!
