Let's talk about having a serious sweet tooth right now! It happens to all of us. Even the strongest, healthiest, cleanest eaters out there crave something sugary and tart and tasty every so often. (Kale doesn't satisfy my chocolate cravings, sorry guys!) When I get my sugar-craving at work, I run across the street and spend $8 on a delicious frozen fruit smoothie...and then I cry my way back to work after realizing that is an absurd price for a beverage!
Smoothies are super simple to make, and I like the flexibility of putting what I want into my drink and knowing exactly what is being put in my body.
My usual smoothie consists of only 3 ingredients! I'm no health nut, but below I've mentioned some simple alterations you can tweak in my recipe to make it a little less sweet, a little healthier, and a little more you.
Ingredients - makes one personal smoothie:
You will also need:
Step 1: Peel your frozen banana! To do so, cut both tips off the banana. Then, slice the peel in half length-wise. Finally, peel the banana!
Step 2: Chop your frozen banana up. The frozen banana will keep the consistency of your finished smoothie creamy without the need for any sort of dairy! That's right - this three ingredient smoothie is vegan...even with the replacement options listed below!
Step 3: Mix 1 cup frozen berries with your 1 chopped up frozen banana. Measure your 1 cup of juice.
If you're cutting down on sugar, the juice can easily be replaced with almond, coconut, or soy milk. If you don't want that milky flavor, look for low-sugar juice options or use coconut water!
There is also the option to add other favorite fruits or (even better) veggies! Some delicious options are to add 1-2 cup of spinach, kale, or any other leafy green. This can really help lighten up the tartness.
Step 4: Prep your blender and add in all ingredients. Pulse until it has a creamy texture - not too watery, not too thick. If you find it too liquid-like, I have found that adding a few ice-cubes and blending for an extra few seconds is an easy fix!
P.S. I swear by the Ninja. It's the craziest, quickest, easiest blender/food processor I've ever used!
Step 5: Pour into your favorite travel-mug and take to your next destination! It's delicious, and definitely satisfies those sugar cravings without indulging in the chocolate cake.
Step 6: Enjoy knowing you've made a personalized smoothie without the $8 price-tag.
